University Senators may nominate candidates for the 2024-2025 Senate elections. The deadline for nominations is 12:00 noon on Friday, April 19, 2024. Nominations may also be made from the floor during the April 26 Senate Organizational meeting.

Nominees for all positions must be elected Senators for 2024-2025 in order to be placed on the ballot. Individuals who have a reasonable likelihood of being elected to the Senate by April 25 (the day before elections are held at the Organizational Meeting) will be considered. However, if a candidate’s election to the Senate is not certified before the April 26 election, the nomination will be withdrawn.

Candidates may only be nominated in advance for one position. If the candidate is not elected to that position, they can nominate themself from the floor for another position during the election at the Senate Organizational meeting. Therefore, candidates interested in more than one position are encouraged to nominate themselves for the position that occurs earliest on the ballot.

The order of elections is:

  • One Senator for Chair
  • One Senator for Vice Chair
  • Six Faculty Senators for the Executive Committee
    • One Faculty Senator from Camden
    • One Faculty Senator from New Brunswick
    • One Faculty Senator from Newark
    • One Faculty Senator from Rutgers Biomedical and Health Sciences
    • Two Faculty Senators At-Large [This category is populated at election time by those Executive Committee faculty nominees who do not prevail in the elections conducted for the categories above. Nominations are not accepted in advance.]
  • One Lecturer Faculty Senator for the Executive Committee
  • One Alumni Senator for the Executive Committee
  • One Staff Senator for the Executive Committee
  • Four Student Senators for the Executive Committee
    • One Student Senator from Camden
    • One Student Senator from New Brunswick
    • One Student Senator from Newark
    • One Student Senator from Rutgers Biomedical and Health Sciences
  • One Faculty Representative to the Board of Governors
  • One Student Representative to the Board of Governors
  • Two Faculty Representatives to the Board of Trustees
  • One Undergraduate Student Representative to the Board of Trustees
  • One Graduate Student Representative to the Board of Trustees
  • Two Members of the Policy Approval Committee (pending Senate approval of changes to the Senate Handbook)

Important Notes Regarding Nominations for Chair and Vice Chair

  • Candidates for chair and vice chair shall be elected Senators with two or more years’ experience (not necessarily consecutive) on the Senate and at least one year as either a member of the Executive Committee or as a committee chair or co-chair.
  • Candidates for chair and vice chair must submit campaign statements that include their committee(s) and Senate attendance records for the two prior years of their Senate membership.
  • Nominations from the floor will NOT be accepted for Chair and Vice Chair.

 

TO NOMINATE ANOTHER SENATOR FOR ANY OF THE ABOVE POSITIONS

FIRST confirm with the person you are nominating that they are willing to stand for election.

THEN email the following information to the Senate Executive Secretary at vickih@senate.rutgers.edu:

  • Your name and the unit you represent in the Senate.
  • The NAME of the person you are nominating.
  • The POSITION for which you are nominating that person.
  • Whether your NOMINEE is student, faculty, staff, or alumni.
  • The reason(s) you believe this nominee should be elected to the position.
