PROTECTING THE STUDENT VOTE IN 2020 – Senator Elizabeth Matto, Director of RU Voting-Rutgers, Eagleton Institute of Politics
With a global pandemic raging and college students displaced, voting practices and norms are upended. Without a concerted effort by colleges and universities to help students adjust to new environmental considerations in order to cast their ballot, there will be a considerable drop-off in the youth vote among our students and students across the country, with a potentially devastating impact on our democracy and their futures. Professor Elizabeth Matto, director of RU Voting-Rutgers, will offer advice and share resources that stakeholders across all facets of the campus can use to support students as they seek to exercise their right to vote this fall.

CALL TO ORDER, DETERMINATION OF A QUORUM, INTRODUCTION OF COMMITTEE CHAIRS AND CHARGES, AND CHAIR’S REPORT – Jon Oliver, Chair
Senate Chair Jon Oliver called the meeting to order at 1:10 p.m. He welcomed all present to the first Senate meeting of the 2020-21 academic year, especially those present for the first time. He thanked all Senators for their service to shared governance at Rutgers. Oliver then introduced himself, Senate Vice Chair and Parliamentarian Peter Gillett, and Senate Executive Secretary Mary Mickelsen. He noted that the highlight of the meeting would be the President’s Address by Rutgers’ President Jonathan Holloway and a presentation by Senator Elizabeth Matto on Protecting the Student Vote 2020. He briefly reviewed the procedures on how Senators and guests are to speak during meetings especially reviewing how to conduct Senate business remotely. Oliver also explained how senators are asked to propose charges to the Executive Committee and reminded all in attendance that he is committed to starting Senate meetings on time, exactly 1:10 p.m.

PRESIDENT’S ADDRESS – Jonathan Holloway, University President
Oliver introduced President Holloway and he then proceeded to present the President’s Address. Oliver then expounded on the format and process for the question-and-answer period. President Holloway then responded to questions from his report and other Rutgers-community issues such as:
- Faculty Pay Equity Program
- Student access to health care and the Rutgers Student Health Insurance Plan
- Student mental health and wellness and grant funding to support services
- Strategic institutional clarity
- Potential merger of RWJMS and NJMS and the possible issues surrounding the residency match program
- Alternative work schedules and concrete telecommuting opportunities post-pandemic
- Student member on the Board of Governors with the right to vote
- Health benefits for Part-Time Lecturers

SENATE EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE REPORT – Senate Vice Chair Peter Gillett reported on the September 4, 2020 Senate Executive Committee meeting.
REPORTS OF CAMPUS FACULTY AND STUDENT LIAISONS: Camden Faculty Senator, Sam Rabinowitz reported on the last meeting of the Camden Faculty Council. New Brunswick Student Senator Gavin Mayes reported on recent plans and activities of New Brunswick student governing associations. Faculty Senator Tugrul Ozel, New Brunswick Faculty Council Chair, reported on the New Brunswick Faculty Council meeting held on September 18. Sarah Shobut, Newark Student Senator reported on the recent activities of the Newark students. Senators Carol Lutz and Laura Willett reported on the plans and activities of the RBHS Faculty Council.
